چکیده

Compressional wave velocities (Vp) in quartz aggregate were measured to quantify the effect of pore fluid (H2O) on Vp at high pressure-temperature (P-T). Ultrasonic measurements were conducted on dry and wet quartz aggregate from room temperature to 500°C at 0.5 GPa using a piston cylinder apparatus. The experiment showed a 4% decrease in measured Vp in quartz aggregate with increasing H2O content to 1 wt.%, whereas the temperature derivative of Vp (∂Vp/∂T = −2.8 to −4.9 × 10 km s°C) in wet quartz aggregate remained almost the same as for the dry quartz aggregate (∂Vp/∂T = −5.2 × 10 km s°C). Our high-pressure, high-temperature experiments show that a small amount of pore fluid (0.4 to 1.0 wt.% H2O) can significantly reduce Vp under the P-T conditions of the middle crust.

The Effect of Dynamic Permeability on Velocity and Intrinsic Attenuation of Compressional Waves in Sand

Stress waves contain useful information about the properties of porous materials; they can be recovered through different non-destructive testing methods such as crosswell, vertical seismic profile, borehole logging as well as sonic tests. In all these methods, it is crucial to assess the effects of frequency on wave attributes including velocity and intrinsic attenuation. The dependency of per...

Origin and evolution of ore-forming fluids in the magnetite±apatite Lake Siah deposit (Bafq): Evidence of fluid inclusions and oxygen stable isotope

The Lake Siah magnetite ± apatite deposit is situated in the northeastern of Bafq and Central Iran tectonic zone. The host rock of deposit is composed from lower Cambrian volcano-sedimentary sequence that has exposed as caldera complex. The iron mineralization is as massive ore and includes magnetite and hematite which form with apatite, quartz and calcite gangue minerals. Based on fluid inclus...

Single-crystal elasticity of wadsleyites, β -Mg2SiO4, containing 0.37–1.66 wt.% H2O

The presence of hydrogen can affect elastic properties and seismic velocities of minerals in the Earth's upper mantle. In this study, the secondorder elastic constants of hydrous wadsleyites containing 0.37, 0.84, and 1.66 wt.% H2O were determined by Brillouin scattering at ambient conditions. Measurements were performed on at least three independent crystal planes for each composition. The agg...

Simultaneous structure and elastic wave velocity measurement of SiO2 glass at high pressures and high temperatures in a Paris-Edinburgh cell.

An integration of multi-angle energy-dispersive x-ray diffraction and ultrasonic elastic wave velocity measurements in a Paris-Edinburgh cell enabled us to simultaneously investigate the structures and elastic wave velocities of amorphous materials at high pressure and high temperature conditions. We report the first simultaneous structure and elastic wave velocity measurement for SiO(2) glass ...
